LO1: Task 2 - Format & Layout

  1. All scripts are written in "Courier" font in size twelve.
  2. All screenplays have a character description so the audience so that crew members know what the character should look like. This is particularly important for the make-up and wardrobe departments.
  3. A script is used by actors, directors, producers, camera operators, lighting technicians, location scouts etc.
  4. A computer game script would include a flowchart to show how the game progresses and what choices the player/character can make.
  5. The name of the character is always at the top of the dialogue and is usually in BOLD CAPITALS as this is clearer and easier to read.
  6. Video games feature a synopsis as part of the gameplay so that the player can better understand the storyline.
  7. Film and TV scripts have location/stage directions (e.g. (exit stage left)).  These are important as they tell the actors where they should move on the stage.
  8. The sound effects will be presented on the right.
All the Scripts are written in the same size but not the same font. So a film script uses the least amount of paper possible; a font where all the letters are the same length and width is used.

In a Radio Script, few actions are written. For example in The Archers radio drama, there are some actions e.g. "animal noises". Because it is a radio show the characters are not shown on screen so the sound effects are needed for the audience to be able to create an image of the drama in their head. In Deadpool the characters are shown onscreen so a lot more actions need to be written so the actors know where to move or what action to do.

In the script for Deadpool it is stated whether the scene is set inside or outside and this is done by using the code words: EXT and INT which stand for Exterior and Interior and this is so that the director of photography and location scout are able to use this to navigate where the scene is going to be set and the correct location for the scene. The time of day will also be on the Deadpool Script so that the director of photography can set up the lighting to be correct depending on the time of day on the Script. The set designer and Producer will also use the Script and the description of the location on the Script to book a suitable location to film. The location information will be on the left, this is so the Script is easy to read. The sound effects are shown on the right of the script for the same reason. The editors and the foley artists would use this information on the Script to know what sound effects would need to be made.
